The museum’s first incarnation was as the Atlanta Art Association, founded in 1905, which obtained its first permanent home in 1926, which was a donation by Mrs. Joseph M. The Fox Theatre When was it built? The vision was initially conceived by the Shriners organization in 1928 for their HQ, but was completed by movie mogul William Fox in 1929 on Christmas Day with the premiere of Disney’s Steamboat Willie Where is it located? In Midtown at 660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30308 Who built it? The Shriners vision for the Fox was so elaborate, costing about $40 million in today’s dollars, that they could not afford to pay for its completion and so had to lease the auditorium to William Fox, who had made a fortune building movie theatres across America How Big is it? 250,000 SF and the auditorium can hold 4,665 people What’s Unique about this Place? The auditorium contains the largest Moller theatre organ in the world, called “Mighty Mo,” with 3,622 pipes that you can enjoy before the show. It’s also one of the few remaining historical buildings in Atlanta with ornate architecture and decorations, stained glass windows, and a cobalt “sky” ceiling in the auditorium with a sea of twinkling stars. Piedmont Park When was it built? The park was originally a forest that was turned into farmland by the Walker family in the mid-1800s. Several exhibitions and fairs took place at the park during the late 1800s. The most significant was the Piedmont Exposition of 1887 and the Cotton and international Exposition of 1895. These fairs resulted in the creation of many of the features still in the park today, including the ball fields, the 11.5-acre Clara Meer lake, and the stone balustrades scattered around the park. The park was built in pieces over the course of several decades by different parties. First the Walker family, then the exposition organizers, then the City of Atlanta in the 1900s. The Olmstead Brothers, the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park and Prospect Park in New York, had a major influence on the park’s development. Colony Square was one of the first major retail projects in Midtown, Atlanta, and was therefore key to its transformation from an area that was full of crime to the thriving district it is today Why Should I Care? Colony Square has been undergoing a massive renovation by the same group that built the Avalon project in Alpharetta and redeveloped Atlantic Station, transforming a traditional indoor mall into an outdoor retail experience with a food hall. The current headquarters building was built in 2001. The design was created by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates Inc. of Atlanta in association with Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York and built by Beers Construction Co. with Torcon Inc. and C.D. Moody Construction of Atlanta, and the Integral Group of Atlanta How Big is it? It is 746,000 SF and 10 stories tall What’s Unique about this Place? The building was built with Cherokee marble from the same quarry in Tate, GA, that supplied the marble for the Atlanta Fed’s 1964 building and other public buildings in Atlanta and Washington, DC. Portman Holdings was both architect and developer, although the project was initiated by Georgia Tech How Big is it? The $400 million dollar project includes 645,000 SF of office, 30,000 SF of retail, and an 80,000 SF data center What is significant about it? The project was initiated by Georgia Tech to house the research division of the computing school and several innovative companies have offices here including WeWork, Dematic, ThyssenKrupp, and Keysight Technologies, with office rents achieving $50/SF, which along with Ponce City Market are the highest in Atlanta Who owns it? Portman Holdings owns the building; the Georgia Tech Foundation owns the land Why should I care? The project includes state of the art technology including 1,000 smart glass windows, a duel-car computer operated elevator system, a collaboration core that will act as a common area and lobby for each floor, and the world’s tallest spiral staircase. There are also expected to be 25,000 SF of street level restaurants, called The Collective, including Wildleaf and El Burro Pollo Burritos as well as the London born, Costa Coffee.
